Matrix Games and Slitherine Games’ Holiday Sale…A Look at the Options.

$

Well, this is primarily a shopping list for myself…but I figured I’d share it with everyone else, just in case anyone else shares my taste preferences. Note that none of these games are free – but they are being discounted by up to 35% or so…which isn’t as high as I’d like to see the discounts, but is about the highest you’ll ever see from Matrix Games or Slitherine.

[This post is a work in progress]

Games I Bought During This Sale…

Games I’m Interested In

Games I Already Own

  • AGEOD’s Birth of America – See above.
  • Slitherine’s Chariots of War – $13 – I found this game very enjoyable and one of the only games to simulate the Fertile Crescent during biblical times. I’d consider this a beer & pretzels wargame.
  • Slitherine’s Commander – Napoleon at War – $20 – Not a huge fan of this game, though I am of the later Commander – The Great War. I believe they rebuilt the engine since then…this engine has very blurry graphics imho.
  • Slitherine’s Field of Glory – $20 – Simulates ancient warfare at a tactical level. I bought this game but have never been able to get into it…Maybe I’ll give it another try sometime, it feels a bit too much like a tabletop wargame…which is the feel I think they were going for. There are a number of expansions also available for $13/ea.: Decline and Fall (Middle East, Byzantine Empire, etc.), Eternal Empire (Ottoman Empire, 1299-1500), Immortal Fire (Greeks 7th – 3rd centuries BC), Legions Triumphant (Rome, 25 BC to 493 AD), Rise of Rome, Storms of Arrows (Western Europe, 1300-1500), Swords and Scimitars (Crusades, 11th-13th centuries AD). I do not own any of the expansions.
  • Slitherine’s Legion Arena: Gold - $26 – An enjoyable Roman Empire tactical simulation with RPG elements. I was a beta tester for Slitherine on this one.

NEWS: Armored Brigade Receives Significant Upgrade.

$

From the Armored Brigade website:

“0.810 BETA build released.

A major release! 7 new nationalities and tons of new features! The current 11 armies include the US Army, USSR, Finland, FRG, the British Army, Yugoslavia, Italy, Sweden, Norway, France and the Netherlands. That makes 321 units and 38 aircraft in total! Some new features like the neutral units that force you to identify everything before engaging, and the dummy objectives that make the enemy plans more obscure, are rarely seen in wargames.

This release is certainly an important milestone in the evolution of wargames.”
